Soup for the senior’s soul at Vintage House in Sonoma

The Soup for Seniors, which takes place Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Vintage House senior center, is roaring along, according to Kelsey Maddox, programs and services manager. He said, “We have transitioned from our pilot guest cook to a series of volunteer cooks and restaurants with each creating and contributing pots of soup per week.”

Café Le Haye, the Girl & the Fig, Sonoma Hills Retirement Center, Mustards and some individual cooks are each feeding an average of 70 to 90 seniors per week as part of the program. And they could use more culinary help, according to Maddox.

“One guest described the lunch as ‘being on a front porch with friends,’” said Maddox. “We could not have asked for a better endorsement as our goal has been to help eliminate isolation and build a supportive community for aging adults in the Valley. Everyone feels very good and full after Soup for Seniors.”

The program was launched in July with support from such nonprofits as Sweetwater Spectrum and FISH. Sweetwater is still providing some vegetables from its gardens to the rotating group of six chefs, depending on their wants and needs.

“We are planting our winter vegetables now,” said Sweetwater Director Kory Stradinger. “We hope the chefs will let us know what they would like to see in our garden.”

Vintage House is at 264 First St. E. 996-0311.
