Society Thrives Here -Mexican Independence Day 2012

September 16

Dec 14, 2012 - 03:17 PM

It’s a colorful cultural whirlwind when the annual celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day lands on the historic Sonoma Plaza. It is hosted by Nuestra Voz, a Sonoma Valley nonprofit dedicated to supporting the Hispanic population by developing leaders within the community. The organization also offers programs such as health and fitness classes, language and literacy development and civic engagement to support immigrants in Sonoma. It hosts cultural events, such as September’s Independence Day party that included speeches, live traditional music, sumptuous Mexican foods and authentic dances from Sonoma’s Mexican Ballet Folklórico Quetzalén. This nonprofit dance troupe brings the costumes, color and creativity of traditional Latin dance to promote awareness of, and appreciation for, Mexico’s rich heritage. The dancers, photographed here by Victor Ferrer, range from toddlers to senior citizens, with dozens working together to preserve their culture in a new land.
